It is no secret that students at Byram are under huge amounts of stress, and because of this, many of us are easily bothered. As teenagers, we cannot help but be bothered by even just the small things. For example, my best friend Snapchatted me bright and early at 6:23 on a horrible Monday morning, “Ugh we have school today.” This might sound pretty ordinary, but today this was unbearable. This particular Monday was worse because it was snowing and we were the only school in Westchester without a delay or the day off. That leads me to one of Byram’s first pet peeves:
For example, my best friend Snapchatted me bright and early at 6:23 on a horrible Monday morning, “Ugh we have school today.” This might sound pretty ordinary, but today this was unbearable. This particular Monday was worse because it was snowing and we were the only school in Westchester without a delay or the day off. That leads me to one of Byram’s first pet peeves:
#1 School on a snowy day.
As the day continues, during third period I really wanted to get a snack for my classes before lunch. I go to the cafeteria and I am beyond disappointed and I come across another one of Byram’s top Pet-Peeves.
#2 All of the good cookies are sold out in the cafeteria.
As I am on my way to my period four class after being disappointed by the scarcity of cookies, I arrived to my Math class to find out that my teacher’s classes earlier in the day had a free, but we have a substitute teacher because our teacher is not in school.
#3- Having a sub when all the other classes got a free.
Finally, it was time for lunch. However, by the time I am dismissed from class, the eight seats that are around the table are taken up, or there is not an empty table for my friends, and I to sit.
#4- Not enough seats at the lunch tables.
I make my way to get my panini for lunch in the cafeteria, but by the time it’s my order, there are only five minutes left of B lunch. Soon after, it was time for me to go to my class. I quickly run out of lunch with my sandwich to go eat by my locker quickly. However, this is not possible.
#5- Students cannot eat in Freshman Hall.
The only other option is for me to bring my lunch to class. Then, it is time for my seventh-period class on the other side of the building and I already am late.
#6- Not enough time in-between classes.
I settle in for class and then I finally get to my last period class. I sit down and I am handed a sheet of paper. As I look around, I see everyone around me is busily scribbling away, bringing me to my next pet peeve.
#7- Pop quizzes on a Monday.
I hand in my quiz feeling relieved, and we go on with the rest of the material presented today. I pack up, but I can’t leave the classroom until 2:25, which is when many of the buses leave.
#8- Not having enough time to pack up at your locker.
I rush to make the bus on time but it’s 2:28, and by the time I get downstairs, put on my jacket, and am ready to go, I miss the bus.
#9- The buses leave too early.
I motivate myself to go for some extra help, but since it is snowing my teachers have left and I am trapped at school.
#10- Being stuck at school because of the weather.
I go to the bathroom to calm down and wait for someone to pick me up. It is the end of the day, and I am finally tranquil. I run to the bathroom and wash my hands. I wash my hands, but I am disappointed.
#11- Only cold water to wash your hands within the bathrooms.
All I want to do is sit on a bench and listen to music on my phone, but my phones dead.
#12- No outlets anywhere to charge your phone.
I go to the library to do some of my homework. I walk over to the library and am annoyed to find the yellow sign on the door.
#13- The library closes too early for many students.
I make my way back to the halls to do some work. However, I am having some trouble.
#14- No flat surfaces to do your work.
I go home to do some work, sadly around 7:30 I realize I left my English binder at school. I convince my mom to take me back to get my binder.
#15- The hallway doors are locked after a certain time.
I go on Google classroom to try to find the worksheet I’m missing, but I am not able to find it there.
#16- Google Classroom isn’t updated with the work I need.
I text a friend, but they are not answering so I move on. I look on my computer and I find out that I missed practice today.
#17- Realizing you missed something but no reminders or posts were there to remind you.
By the time I have finished my work and take a shower, it is already 12:15 and I need to go to sleep.
#18- Having to go to bed late because of studying and homework.
I wake up early next morning and stuff my textbook in my bag.
#19- My textbook being too heavy and bulky to fit in my backpack or my hands.
Finally, I get to relax on the bus. However, this is not always the case.
#20- Missing the bus because it just comes too early.
I miss the bus but am able to catch a ride to school. My teacher promised to help me in the morning, but the roads were bad and now she can’t make it.
#21- Teachers not notifying you if any events or plans change.
I try to fix up my work quickly in the morning, but I don’t have enough time. I didn’t even get time to eat breakfast, so I go to the cafeteria to get a muffin, but I am going to be late.
#22- Not enough time to do everything you need to do before school starts.
I rush to my class, but my teacher marks me late.
#23- Being marked late when you are not there within a minute.
I have some extra time when I finish my in-class assignment early, so I go on the Parent Portal.
#24- A grade was just posted that you did not physically get back yet
I run to go to my teacher to ask what I can do to fix it, but they never give me the response I want. They try to make me feel better, but I am defeated.
#25- Teachers who don’t understand no matter how much you dress it up, a bad grade is a bad grade.
Evidently, students at Byram Hills High School are somewhat irritable. This is not a reflection on the students’ personalities but rather of their workload and the amount of pressure they are put under. Each day at Byram is a new monster and it is likely that many of these feelings listed are experienced by students at Byram, but we won’t hold it against them! High school is certainly challenging and it is normal for students to feel frustrated now and again.
