This season, the varsity boys basketball team has been off to an exciting start with a 10-3 record and a bevy of reasons for their success to continue. The team has demonstrated versatility, toughness, and basketball intelligence, all ingredients toward future wins.
Despite losing a strong group of seniors last year, this year’s team has still shown real promise. There are a lot strengths surrounding this team including a competitive mindset that’s having a ripple effect during practices and games. That same competitiveness has also translated to team chemistry, something that has significantly contributed toward these wins. But there are also certain individuals that have stepped up – in particular, according to Head Coach Ted Repa, are Michael Parrotta and Jon Trongone, who have been the team’s leading scorers. They are two out of many other players who are currently making a big impact or will be counted on during the playoffs. Some other impact players include Matteo Sinon, whose improvement has been evident, along with Nic Picca, who has been a huge contributor off the bench.
Their success so far has resulted in plenty of well-earned confidence for this team heading into the playoffs. As Repa put it, “I think this team has an opportunity to really over-achieve. There are more talented teams in Class A, but if we continue to improve at the details, and stay together through the long grind of the regular season, we are very optimistic.” That kind of confidence really powers a team that has “really enjoyed our time together thus far.” Considering the journey this team has taken to be amongst the elite, the chances of them succeeding in the playoffs – just like the regular season – are very likely.
But this is just a small part of an exciting yet challenging road ahead. One of the tests this team will face during the season is going to come against Rye. After previously losing to them at home, Repa expressed the upcoming game as a contest where they’re “very excited to have another shot at them.”
For the postseason, this team has all the pieces to go on another deep run. While Repa didn’t go into his opinion on playoff results, he did state that this team has been one of the most enjoyable teams he has coached and he’s excited to see how far they can advance.
