I’ll Be There For You, Take Two

By Drew Siskin

In this crazy time when it may seem like the aliens have taken over, there is one thing out there to make people around the globe feel sane: television. As I am sure anyone reading this article knows, watching television on streaming platforms is one of the few activities that we can use to practice social distancing and entertain ourselves from our own homes. However, from my recent experience,  I have found that choosing the perfect show to watch during this extended time at home was harder than I imagined.

As I recalled the best television series I had ever completely finished, I immediately thought of the hit sitcom, Friends. Friends was a light-hearted show that I knew would always bring a smile to my face. Growing up, Friends was always on TV at 10 PM when it seemed like there was nothing else to watch. It was always in these moments where I started to rekindle those indescribable feelings of joy that I had felt in middle school when first watching the show.

As an avid fan, it was only my natural instinct to have wanted the creators of friends to produce more content. Although unrealistic, I longed for a Friends reunion and one more chance to see my favorite characters reminisce about their television lives. I was overwhelmed with excitement when I realized that there would, in fact, be a Friends reunion and I am eternally grateful to the producers who made it happen.

On March 23rd and March 24th, 2020, the old cast of Friends was scheduled to film a reunion episode. Unfortunately, like many events, including most recently the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the taping has been postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Friends, old or new, will always show me how important my friendships are and how I should never take them for granted. Hug your loved ones tight because you never know what will happen in the future. I know I am excited to be playing Friends trivia in person with my friends once it is safe to be out again. Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow- thank you for teaching us the value of friendships and creating an iconic show that will prevail for generations to come. In the midst of a pandemic, Friends shows us, yet again, that there will always be something to look forward to.Screen Shot 2020-04-01 at 10.16.37 AM.png
