Hubie Halloween Review

By Mya Tauber

Though October 31 has passed, the spirit of Halloween is still in the air! Normally, you may choose to rewatch some classic horror movies, which is always a good choice. This year though, perhaps you can mix it up and try Adam Sandler’s new comedy horror film, Hubie Halloween, which is now available on Netflix.

The movie is written, produced, and starred by Adam Sandler and it has a stacked cast. Whether it is the familiar faces we have seen on Disney Channel, including Peyton List, Karan Bar, Paris Berelc, Bradley Steven Perry, and China Ann McClain, or other renowned actors like Maya Rudolph, Ben Stiller, Kevin James, Shaquille O’Neal, Julie Bowen, Noah Schnapp, the cast is something to look forward to when watching this movie. The movie follows the events  of Halloween night in Salem, Massachusetts as the entire town prepares for some spooky fun. Hubie, played by Adam Sandler, is a kindhearted and simpleminded middle-aged man, who still lives with his mother. Hubie is also a community volunteer devoted to ensuring that everyone  has a safe holiday. Unfortunately, these attributes also make Hubie a target of teasing and bullying by the residents of his beloved hometown. On Halloween night though, these same bullies begin to mysteriously disappear in strange ways, and Hubie makes it his duty to save them!

Despite the enthusiasm leading up to Hubie Halloween, the film received just a 46% by Rotten Tomatoes. The New York Times called the movie a “proudly regressive seasonal comedy”. Plugged In was not as friendly in their review; they said this: “Getting to the chocolatey heart of this holiday pic is more gross-out trick than sweet treat.” Personally, I did not like Adam Sandler’s high pitched voice and how it  took awhile for the plot to build.  Even though there are mixed reviews, critics say it should not be long before Hubie Halloween takes over the monthly #1 spot and the Fall Top 10 list of movies.  Overall, I still recommend watching this movie if you are looking for some nice laughs and something light-hearted. The loaded cast, including some of my favorite childhood actors, is also a huge reason why I was excited to see the movie and why you should be too!
