This year’s Met Gala took place on September 13th, hosted by Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman. The Met Gala is the most exclusive night of the year when it comes to fashion. Each year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Gala is held as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme was ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.’ This theme explored the most popular looks and trends in American culture, whether it be from our past, present, or even future. Many celebrities showed up paying an ode to old Hollywood fashion. Although the Met Gala is such a prestigious event, many celebrities did not attend due to COVID-19. All celebrities had to be vaccinated and wear face masks throughout the night, except when on the carpet, in order to attend.
Many celebrities took this opportunity to make political statements with their clothing. For example, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the event wearing an Aurora James gown that read “Tax the Rich.” In the Instagram caption of her dress, she stated, “The time is now for childcare, healthcare, and climate action for all. Tax the rich.” Supermodel Cara Delevingne also attended the event wearing a Christian Dior top that read “Peg the Patriarchy” in bold red letters.
Let’s take a closer look into some of the most memorable looks from this night. Emma Chamberlain attended with Louis Vuitton. Wearing a 70s and 60s inspired look. Billie Eilish partnered with Oscar de la Renta for a look inspired by Marilyn Monroe. Kaia Gerber also partnered with Oscar de la Renta for a vintage Hollywood look. Lil Nas X also attended wearing three futuristic looks on the carpet, all designed by Versace. Yara Shahidi wore a Dior gown also paying tribute to old Hollywood fashion. Hunter Schafer, likewise, took a more futuristic approach in partnership with Prada. Harris Reed designed an extravagant gold look for Iman. Hailey and Justin Bieber attended with YSL for a sleek, black, matching look. Frank Ocean stepped out of the box and partnered with Prada. Kendall Jenner wore a twenties-inspired gown designed by Givenchy. Gigi Hadid took a classic and elegant approach with Prada. Rihanna and ASAP Rocky arrived as a couple, both in Balenciaga. Lily-Rose Depp came wearing Chanel. Olivia Rodrigo came dressed by YSL. Kim Kardashian made an all-black statement with Balenciaga. Although some familiar faces at the Met were missing, like Bella Hadid, Zendaya, and Blake Lively, many new celebrities made appearances as well. Some other celebrities that made an appearance were Brooklyn Beckham, Nicola Peltz, Addison Rae, Jennifer Lopez, Vittoria Ceretti, Donatella Versace, Anok Yai, Pete Davidson, Kristen Stewart, and Zoë Kravitz.
The Met Gala is a night for designers to showcase their best work and for celebrities to express their creativity. It’s also a night where great art is meant to be appreciated. Although the Met Gala this year didn’t feel quite the same as it always does, it was satisfactory to see how many celebrities interpreted such a broad theme. Some attendees kept it simple and some people went all out. Some people made political statements, and some people even chose to attend with up-and-coming or underground designers. This Met Gala was a good way to show how activism can be incorporated into high fashion and how staple pieces in American culture can be represented in numerous different ways.
